03 · A SHORT HISTORY OF K-DRAMA GOING GLOBAL
K-drama did not become global overnight. Each era changed how Korean stories traveled and what international audiences discovered.
Korean dramas began gaining large audiences in neighboring Asian markets, helping establish “Hallyu” as a recognizable cultural wave.
Winter Sonata became a cultural phenomenon in Japan, while Jewel in the Palace carried Korean history, food and court culture to audiences across Asia and beyond.
Titles such as Descendants of the Sun and Goblin expanded the international fan base as online distribution and subtitling made Korean dramas easier to discover.
Global streaming turned K-drama into a mainstream category. Squid Game became Netflix’s biggest non-English TV phenomenon, while romance, zombies, webtoon adaptations and genre dramas all found worldwide audiences.
K-DRAMA → K-CULTURE
Netflix’s 2025 research found that K-content viewers often become more curious about Korean food, language, fashion, beauty and travel. That makes K-drama a natural bridge to the food and culture stories already explored at JCDKR.
